Support for Prison Voices Count

Every voice counts – even those from behind prison walls. Perhaps, especially those from behind prison walls.

With this thought in mind, Canyon Park Echoes Toastmasters members voted to support Prison Voices Count, a non-profit dedicated to supporting Toastmasters clubs within the correctional and rehabilitation system.

Prison Voices Counts fosters both the human and the economic benefits of Toastmasters in prison. The inmates gain confidence, dignity and job seeking skills. In addition, prisons who participate in Toastmasters are less likely to return to prison after their release. For the Monroe Correctional Center, this is a possible savings of $1.2 million based on 3 prison clubs based there.

Thanks to Pat Sultan for bringing this program to our attention and kudos to our club members for voting to support this cause. We voted to donate $72, the membership dues for one prisoner for one year.

Contest results

Congratulations to our 2013 Canyon Park Echoes Humorous Speech contest winner Kelly Thompson and Table Topics contest winner Erik Granquist !

Our club held a competition on August 28th to select our representatives for the Area 54 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Competitions. After some very interesting speeches and table topics, Kelly walked home with the first prize at the Humorous speech contest; while Erik Granquist won first place in the Table Topics contest.

They will go on to represent our club at the Area 54 contest to be held on Tuesday September 24 at 5 PM:

Seattle Times Building

 19200 120th Avenue Northeast

 Bothell,WA 98011

Kelly weathered stiff competition from Tommie Rubatino (2nd place winner) and Mike Everett (3rd place winner) during the Humorous Speech contest.  Kelly’s speech about her teenage boys had the audience in stitches and secured her the first place.

Erik Granquist had a strong challenge from our club contestants Trey Sherrill (2nd place winner) and Tony Morrison (3rd place winner).  Erik’s very witty and apt depiction of where last used the “scarf” (prop provided) won him the first place.

Contratulations again Kelly and Erik !   We look forward to supporting you at the Area 54 contest.
