Congratulations to our Triple Crown Member Erin Knight

(posted on behalf of Barb McIntyre)

Please help me congratulate Erin Knight for achieving her Triple Crown in 2011-2012.  Erin completed her Competent Leadership (CL) in January 2012, her Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) in May of 2012, and her Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) in May of 2012.  She was recognized at this past TM District 2 Conference and will be awarded a Triple Crown Pin.  Any Toastmaster that completes three levels (CC, CL, ALB, ALS, ACB, ACS, ACG, DTM) in one Toastmaster year (July-June) is eligible to win the Triple Crown.  It might be easier than you think so be sure to look at what you need to do to complete the level beyond what you are working on.

Congratulations Erin, on behalf of the Canyon Park Echoes club, we are so proud of you.

Congratulations to Yvonne and to our volunteers for the Division E Speech Contest

Congratulation Yvonne for placing 3rd at the Division contest.  Wonderful job in representing Canyon Park Echoes and quite a personal journey as well.

Thank you also to our volunteers that keep giving to Toastmasters beyond the club level.  Having members that are willing to support Toastmasters outside of our club shows the dedication we have to this organization and wonderful members in general!

Thanks to Melissa Barnes, Linda Whittlesey, and Barb McIntyre for volunteering as well as for cheering on one of our own.

Division E Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest

(submitted on behalf of Barb McIntyre)

Hello Fellow Toastmasters,

There are still a few roles to fill for the Division E Humorous Speech Contest this Thursday evening. It would be great for Canyon Park Echoes to have as strong a presence as we did for the Area Contest.

Please see email below from our Area Governor, Tammy Preuss. I volunteered to be Ballot Counter and bring cookies. If you are able and willing to fill a role, email Tammy directly at PREUSS, TAMMY L (tp7178@att.com).

Let’s all turn out to cheer Yvonne on!

Tips for being a successful Mentor

  1. Get your Mentee’s contact information and discuss the best way to communicate (Phone, email, or face to face)
  2. Try to arrange a meeting within the first few weeks where you both can meet for 15 minutes and discuss what the mentee wants out of the relationship
  3. Look at the schedule every week for the next few weeks and note times when your mentee will be in a new role
  4. Discuss with your mentee what the expectations are for that role and how to be prepared
  5. Try to sit near your mentee at the meetings when they are performing a new role
  6. Offer to fill out your mentee’s Leadership Manual each week if possible and encourage them to get feedback from others in the club
  7. Offer to help your mentee with their first few speeches, provide tips to help them with their nerves, provide feedback after each speech that encourages them and gives them good things to work on for the next speech
  8. Encourage your mentee to volunteer for new roles as they open up and be there for them to answer any questions they have
  9. Encourage your mentee to raise their hand for table topics
  10. Ask for feedback from time to time on how you can be a better mentor, remember that each relationship is going to be different than any other mentor/mentee relationship you might have had before
  11. Remember that TMI.org has great information on how to be a good mentor, refer to the website for additional tips and tricks
