Spring Speech Contests are HERE!

submitted on behalf of Barb McIntyre

We have all come to Toastmasters, or perhaps are looking to join Toastmasters, for various reasons. Those reasons usually fall into two general categories, either we lack confidence in speaking to groups and want to overcome the fear, or we are energized by speaking to groups and want more opportunity to do so.

Regardless of which category you may find yourself in, the Annual Evaluation Contest, and International Speech Contest are a perfect opportunity for YOU! It is always exciting to see the growth in new members. If you are ready to challenge yourself to ‘take it to the next level’ enter one or both of the upcoming contests offered by Toastmasters. Speaking in a new setting with a little added competition will offer you experience not found at the club level. Here is what Yvonne, winner of our Humorous Speech Contest had to say about her experience:

“ I entered the humorous speaking contest because the club asked for another speaker.  I had no intention of making it past the club contest, but am thrilled that I did.  The two levels I competed in after the club were so much fun.  Look at it as a fun experience and go out to enjoy yourself, and you will.”

Canyon Park Echoes will host their Evaluation Contest and International Speech Contest on February 13th and February 20th. The lucky winners will then move on to compete at the Area 54 contest held at The Seattle Times Building on March 20th at 5:30.

We all know volunteers are the backbone of Toastmasters and the contests are no exception. If you aren’t ready to jump in as a contestant, sign up to be a Ballot Counter, a Judge, or maybe a Greeter. However you choose to participate please mark it on your calendar and support your club, your Area, and your fellow Toastmasters!

To sign up or for more information email the club contest chairs:  Mike Everett MEverett@leviton.com or Barbara Bailie barbara8910@comcast.net

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays everyone.  I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday with much love and happiness.  As a reminder, there will be no Canyon Park Echoes Toastmasters meeting on December 26, 2012.  We will gather again on January 2nd and we look forward to helping all club members achieve their toastmaster goals for the 2012-2013 TM year.  Please let any board member or your mentor know how we can help you achieve your goals.

Meet Chamila Marasinghe

Hello fellow Canyon Park Echoes Members.  Please reintroduce yourselves to Chamila.  She joined our club back in March 2012.  Chamila is an engineer in training at Seattle Genetics.  She also loves to travel and to cook.  We look forward to the potluck meeting when she brings in a dish… Yummy! Chamila’s personal goal is to be an attentive parent who is alwasy there for her children… I am sure the family enjoys some quality dinner time together.

Chamila’s Toastmaster goals are to lose the fear of public speaking and I hope we can all help Chamila with this through positive encouragement and quality evaluations that focus on improvement.  We encourage Chamila to participate in as many table topics as possible when she doesn’t have other roles in the club to help develop that comfort level of standing up on the spur of the moment.

Chamila, thank you for joining our club and we look forward to seeing you in our club meetings as often as your work allows you to participate.

Congratulations to our Triple Crown Member Erin Knight

(posted on behalf of Barb McIntyre)

Please help me congratulate Erin Knight for achieving her Triple Crown in 2011-2012.  Erin completed her Competent Leadership (CL) in January 2012, her Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) in May of 2012, and her Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) in May of 2012.  She was recognized at this past TM District 2 Conference and will be awarded a Triple Crown Pin.  Any Toastmaster that completes three levels (CC, CL, ALB, ALS, ACB, ACS, ACG, DTM) in one Toastmaster year (July-June) is eligible to win the Triple Crown.  It might be easier than you think so be sure to look at what you need to do to complete the level beyond what you are working on.

Congratulations Erin, on behalf of the Canyon Park Echoes club, we are so proud of you.

Congratulations to Yvonne and to our volunteers for the Division E Speech Contest

Congratulation Yvonne for placing 3rd at the Division contest.  Wonderful job in representing Canyon Park Echoes and quite a personal journey as well.

Thank you also to our volunteers that keep giving to Toastmasters beyond the club level.  Having members that are willing to support Toastmasters outside of our club shows the dedication we have to this organization and wonderful members in general!

Thanks to Melissa Barnes, Linda Whittlesey, and Barb McIntyre for volunteering as well as for cheering on one of our own.
