Toastmasters: What’s in it for me?

By Kathy Nishihara

“Why join Toastmasters?” you might ask. The very thought of public speaking casts fear and trepidation among many people. Why would someone voluntarily give a speech in front of an audience? Why subject yourself to the torture of public speaking? I think our mission statement sums it up.

The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

Toastmaster’s isn’t only about giving a formal speech. You learn communication skills – how to listen, how to give both positive and negative feedback or learning how to interface with people from different backgrounds and skill levels. You also learn leadership skills – how to effectively run a meeting, facilitate discussion or organize an
event.

Effective communication and leadership are some key qualities employers are looking for in prospective employees. Joining a Toastmaster’s club will help you develop and nurture your communication and leadership skills and give you that extra edge!
